Members of the Los Angeles Arboretum Foundation are cordially invited to attend the Annual Members’ Meeting on Saturday, June 1.

William Deverell, professor of history at University of Southern California, is our guest speaker.

Just Add Water (and Labor): The San Gabriel Valley and the Tale of Two Empires

This talk will offer a historical overview of the agricultural growth of the San Gabriel Valley from the late 19^th through the early 20^th centuries. Focusing on water and labor, the address will also compare and contract Elias Jackson Baldwin and Henry Edwards Huntington as two very different kinds of men, businessmen, and citizens.

William Deverell is a Professor of History at the University of Southern California, where he also serves as the Divisional Dean for the Social Sciences. A graduate of Stanford University, he completed his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in American history at Princeton. He is the co-director of the Huntington-USC Institute on California and the West and the founding director of the Los Angeles Service Academy, a program which teaches high school students about the infrastructure of greater Los Angeles. He has published numerous books on the history and culture of the 19^th and 20^th century American West. He and his wife, Jenny Watts, the Special Projects Curator at The Huntington, live in Pasadena and have two children, Helen (23) and John (19).
