About This Event
Deciduous Flowering Trees & Friends
Instructor: Dr. Jerrold Turney PhD
We live in one of the most diverse urban forests in the USA; how much do you know about the trees of Southern California? In this new tree class, the focus will be on flowering trees. The one hour lecture will focus on the trees, and will be followed by a walk in the gardens to see the trees that are in bloom. Dr. Jerrold Turney, plant pathologist and certified arborist, will teach you to identify the trees, their growth habit, where they are native, how they should be cared for, any common diseases or insect pests and where they should be planted in your garden.
He received his B. S. In Botany from California State Polytechnic University and his Ph.D. in plant pathology from the University of California at Riverside. He has served as the curator of the camellia gardens at the Huntington Library and Botanic Gardens, a research horticulturist at the Los Angeles County Arboretum, and is currently the plant pathologist for the Department of Agricultural Commissioner/Weights and Measures for the County of Los Angeles. In addition, Dr. Turney was formerly a licensed landscape contractor, and is currently a licensed agricultural pest control advisor and an ISA certified arborist. His primary fields of expertise are plant pathology, mycology and arboriculture.
