SOLD OUT! Six Word Blooms Poetry Reading
Located in Garden of Quiet Reflection
Celebrating Women, Nature & Words
Sold out! Our Six Word Blooms Papel Picado & Poetry Exhibit opens with a reading by poets invited to create original works of six words. Their poems will be featured on outdoor, large-scale installations of Papel Picado created by Karina Puente. The Los Angeles Arboretum Foundation commissioned the exhibition of poetry and Papel Picado, a traditional Mexican art form.
The six-word format was specifically selected for its accessibility and appeal. Similar to the haiku, the six-word form allows for a succinct capturing of an image, reflection, narrative, or feeling.
As a poet and educator in the literary arts for over 25 years, Olga García Echeverría, curator of Six Word Blooms, is always looking for poetic “entradas” or entrances/gateways for her students, especially for those who do not consider themselves writers/poets and who may be intimidated by more complex poetic forms.
A six-word poem is welcoming, fun, and, like a vignette, it can exist as an individual snapshot or be a part of a series that, when strung together, tells a larger collective story. Its conciseness also allows the audience to take in poetic material in a minimal way.
Poets will share their six-word poems and read other selections of their work that pertain to the specified theme. Artist Karina Puente will discuss how the Papel Picado creations aim to be in communion with the natural elements. Please click here for full poet/artist bios.
