Zoom! Herbs for the Nerves

About this Zoom class

Instructor: Irena Stathis

In this class, we will look at some of our calming nerviness and nerve tonics to support us through times of great stress and anxiety. We will be working with potent herbs to calm the mind, release tension, relax the body, and promote restful sleep. We will explore the many varied properties and uses of some of our most common gentle herbs like Chamomile and Melissa as well as other less well-known remedies for the psyche and nervous system.

Class will run about two hours. You will want a quiet, comfortable place to sit, where you won’t be disturbed, a notebook and some hot water for making tea nearby.

To prepare for class, it is recommended getting some Chamomile tea (Irena suggests Traditional Medicinals brand, but whatever you can find is okay). Also, some fresh or dried Lavender flowers (fresh is preferable, so if you don’t have any in your garden look around in your neighborhood or perhaps buy a small plant from a nursery), even Lavender essential oil will do, if that’s all you have. Lastly, some Lemon Balm tea bags. Try looking at a local health food store or market.

If you aren’t able to find all three, don’t worry, you will still be able to participate in the class, but having the herbs with you will certainly add to the experience!

The zoom link will be emailed to registered participants 24 hours before the class. For questions, email the Education Department at education@arboretum.org.

Irena Cora Stathis is an Herbalist and Educator specializing in self-care, natural beauty, herbal foods and preventative wellness. She handcrafts botanical beauty products, hydrosols, herbal teas, extracts, essences, and balms from the plants in her garden and those that she carefully tends in the wild. She teaches workshops on the Art and Craft of Herbalism at the Los Angeles County Arboretum in Arcadia and she will be offering new classes online this year as well as some limited attendance, outdoor plant explorations.

Last year, she founded the Flowering Earth School of Herbalism with a 10-month Immersion, a hands-on, experiential-based program which explores the many pathways of healing with plant medicines via our own personal connection to the plants and the Earth.

To find out more about her workshops and future offerings, follow her on Facebook: Abalone Herbals, Instagram: @abaloneherbals or you can email her at abaloneherbals@gmail.com.

Irena is ever grateful to her teachers, mentors and friends who have generously shared their vast knowledge and understanding with her and many others, for all the people who came before and have passed down their teachings and traditions, and to the beautiful, wild, and selfless beings who offer up their healing wisdom and medicine, the plants themselves.
