In this course we will discuss the positive impact gardening has on our physical, social, emotional and psychological well being. We will go over a brief history of Therapeutic Gardening, how to utilize universal design when building out a garden, and how to create a garden space for a particular people group (older adults, children, neurodivergent populations, or people recovering from injury). We will discuss passive and active green space and how to create a plant based activity with a specific people group or goal in mind. Resources on how to learn more about therapeutic gardening and horticultural therapy will be discussed.
We will discuss:
-A history of Therapeutic Horticulture and Horticultural therapy.
-The difference between TH and HT
-Areas where TH and HT can be useds: Rehabilitation, vocational, wellness.
-7 elements that make a garden space therapeutic
-Passive and Active Green space
-Adapting your garden space to meet the needs of your target population or goal
Bio: Ashley graduated from UCLA with a Gardening and Horticulture certificate and began working in the Urban Ag community in 2014. She has experience in flower farming and California native landscaping, as well as raised bed gardening for private residences, kitchens, schools and business. She is currently working towards certification in Horticultural Therapy. She is experienced in utilizing gardening as a tool for physical and emotional wellness and sees it as an effective tool for all people. She believes that people who are curious about gardening should be able to access it.

Cancellation & Refund Policy
The Los Angeles Arboretum Foundation reserves the right to cancel a class due to low enrollment or other circumstances which would make the class non-viable. If the Arboretum cancels a class, registrants will be offered a full refund. There are no refunds for cancellations within 7 days of the start of the class. For all other cancellations, your payment will be refunded minus a 10% processing fee.
*LATE ARRIVAL POLICY: Refunds will not be granted to registered guests who miss the class due to tardiness.
