Germain Seed Co. 1922 "Panama Rhubarb"
In the 1920s, downtown Los Angeles was host to several seed and nursery stores including Aggeler & Musseler (620 S. Spring Street), Morris & Snow Seed Co. (439 S. Main Street), Theodore Payne (345 S. Main Street), and Germain’s (326-330 S. Main Street). A little further out was Paul J. Howard’s Flowerland (250 S. La Brea). Also featured below is Armstrong Nurseries (Ontario), Pioneer Nurseries (Monrovia), and Wagner Nurseries (Pasadena).

The seed and nursery companies offered a wide selection of vegetables and included many popular varieties of the time. Below you’ll see several varieties of onions, avocados, melons and the giant Panama Rhubarb (right). Click on the thumbnails to see an enlarged photo.
